The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) is a valuable resource that brings tolight the significant impact that suicide has worldwide. The association provides a wealth of knowledge related to suicide prevention, which can be accessed through the website:
https://www.iasp.info/ . This website has a range of resources that acknowledge the reality that people and communities might be at various stages of having discussions about suicide.
Everyone has lived experiences that are different, and each person may have their own unique thoughts and feelings about how to best navigate conversations about such an important topic.
The IASP recognizes September 10 as World Suicide Prevention Day. The theme chosen for
2024-2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” It takes conversation on multiple levels to
break the silence on the topic of suicide. The discussion needs to be held by individuals,
communities, and governments in order to raise awareness. Changing the narrative requires
compassion and empathy at each of these levels.
To engage with the conversation and to get involved with World Suicide Prevention Day, the
IASP provides many ideas through the website resources including:
1. Light a Candle: On September 10 th at 8 p.m., you can light a candle near a window to
show your support for suicide prevention, to remember a lost loved one, and for
survivors of suicide.
2. Taking Time to Reach Out: This resource highlights the benefit of reaching out to family,
friends, colleagues, or even strangers. Showing that you care can provide others with
hope.
3. Learn about the Facts & Figures: The global suicide statistics indicate that more than
720,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year.
4. Help Spread Awareness on Social Media: Sharing posts created specifically for World
Suicide Prevention Day can help spread awareness.
5. Participate in Move for Life: This is a free, inclusive global event that runs each year
from World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10) to World Mental Health Day
(October 10). It encourages people to engage in physical activity while also increasing
awareness on suicide prevention.
Any way that you chose to get involved is a step towards changing the narrative on suicide. It is also important to know that there is support available for those who may be struggling.
Depending on the circumstances, this may include reaching out to a helpline, a counsellor, or emergency department. It is hoped that having these resources available can help remind
individuals that they are never alone and it is always okay to reach out for help.
